Yours-Mine-His

Yours, Mine, His

Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, [20] for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 NLT

My sister was in the hospital recently. We were worried cancer had returned. A few months earlier, her husband was in the ICU and barely able to breathe with a COVID infection. Tests show my sister doesn’t have cancer and my brother is better now. Awesome, right?

Both of them are "next level" precious to me so both times I prayed with all my strength. Real tears. Real sweat. Real anguish. Brokenness before God.

Both times, God made one truth clear to me. They are not mine. They belong to God and He cares for them much more than I do.

Sure I still refer to them as “my” sister and “my” brother. But the truth is, they don’t belong to me. And honestly, I feel much better when I return ownership to a powerful and loving God who is infinitely capable of caring for them.

Please read the Bible verse at the top and understand these two things:

Our body… was given to us by God.

He formed us in our mother’s womb. He gave us a body.

God bought us. We are His.

God bought us. He owns us whether we agree or not. He has proof of purchase. Ownership is undisputed.

  1. He can do what He wants to.

  2. It's our job to honor Him with these bodies.

Some days I don’t feel very good. My health problems sometimes frustrate and discourage me. So I pray. Sometimes I question and cry, “Why are you doing this to my body?”

You’re smart enough to figure where this is going. My body isn’t mine at all. I belong to God.

You belong to Him too. Is it possible to mistreat His property? Yes. For now, He has left His property under your management. Don't be fooled by your management rights. You do not belong to yourself. You belong to Him twice. He made you and He bought you.
